My Favourite Cafes in Stellenbosch

Let's explore some of Stellenbosch's finest establishments for good vibes, good coffee, and good food. We're taking on this charming town's cafes one espresso shot at a time.

Hello! Victoria from Golvino here, and I wanted to share something a little different for today's blog entry. I am (as many people are) a huge fan of coffee, and frequenting coffee shops, so I thought I would highlight some of my favourites right in the heart of Stellenbosch. This beautiful town has really unique blend of students, working adults, and pensioners, so there are plenty of places that accommodate for each of those demographics. I've picked out some of my favourites, but also places that many locals adore. Whether you've been living here for a few years, or just visiting the Winelands for the day, be sure to check out any of these!

1. Republique

Despite the fact that they are no longer in their original location in Andringa Street and have temporarily moved to the space behind Cotton On, I would be remiss to not include them. They are true testament that a place is not made by its location or decoration, but the people who run it. Yes, where they were stationed before had a cozy French charm to it, but I am sure that they will find their forever home soon right in the heart of Stellenbosch. Pop by for the best cup of coffee, and maybe even stick around to chat with the wonderful staff - they are angels!

My order: Iced vanilla coffee and the Tim’s NYC, or a slice of their Biscoff cheesecake if I’m in the mood for something sweet.

2. Motherdough

Motherdough prides itself on being a 100% natural fermentation bakery. They sell the most fabulous “homemade” jams, pasta sauces, and various other things that you can stock in your very own kitchen - taking a bit of Motherdough’s magic home with you. Whenever I’m having a particularly bad day, I will always treat myself to one of their sweet pastries because I know they’ll brighten my day. It’s semi-hidden in Church Street, but once you discover its plant-covered spot, you’ll be running back for more.

My order: A latte with a lemon bomboloni (one of the best sweet treats I’ve ever had - imagine a fluffier doughnut with a lemon meringue filling).

3. Blix Tavern

Inspired by the classic film Out of Africa and the life of Karen Blixen, Blix Tavern is known for its old-school charm, with dark wooden furnishings, antlers in each room, and thousands of old photographs decorating the walls. In the day, you can enjoy a cup of East African coffee, people-watch from the patio seating or enjoy the small, but intimate café space. But at night is when Blix Tavern truly comes to life; the Tavern becomes a sophisticated space, away from all the student hubbub. They serve excellent cocktails, exclusive beers, award-winning wines, and a variety of cigars (if that’s your cup of tea). If you’re looking for something that feels like a blast to the past, this is the place for you!

4. Meraki

On the corner of Church Street, Meraki is always bustling with life. This is the go-to spot for all of your Instagram posts - the interior/exterior is sleek, all-white and ready to be the backdrop for the perfect photo op! They have a variety of breakfasts to choose from, whether you’re in the mood for something savoury or sweet; they have it all. On the weekends, they are always packed with people, so if you can, I highly recommend reserving a table for your next visit!

My order: Iced coffee and Avocado on Toast (the very best in Stellenbosch).

5. Ya-Ya Café

Just a little bit further down Dorp Street - away from the central buzz of town - is a true gem. Ya-Ya Café is a charming coffee shop just a block away from the Rupert Museum, and a great spot that the locals love. I introduced my partner to this place, so when we lived in Stellenbosch, we would go for breakfast there often after his shifts at the hospital. The booth seating with the natural light pouring in is truly one of the best ways to start your day, so trek off the beaten track and try Ya-Ya Café.
